Prudential helps close protection gap with Singapore’s first insurance plan that covers four types of pre-existing medical conditions

Singapore, 13 March 2018 – Prudential Singapore has launched Singapore’s first insurance plan, PruVital Cover, offering protection to people who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes1, and the three “health highs” – high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a high body mass index (BMI).

In Singapore, insurance plans do not typically cover people with these pre-existing conditions as they are at a higher risk of developing chronic diseases.

Prudential Singapore’s Chief Customer Officer, Ms Angela Hunter, said PruVital Cover is the first-of-its-kind regular premium term plan that offers greater financial peace of mind to people with pre-existing medical conditions.

“A recent poll conducted with our customers who did not qualify for life insurance found that more than seven in 10 were rejected because they had at least one of the four medical conditions covered under PruVital Cover2. This protection gap is a concern and as Singapore’s leading life insurer, we want to do our part to help close it,” she said.

Based on statistics from the Ministry of Health, diabetes and the three “health highs” are among the most prevalent medical conditions in Singapore.

Today, about one in five Singaporeans aged 18 to 69 years of age have high blood pressure (23.5%) and high cholesterol (17.4%), and at least one in 10 Singaporeans in the same age group have diabetes (11.3%) or a high BMI (10.8%)3. These percentages have been on an uptrend in the last decade.

Ms Hunter said, “We are committed to offering solutions that are relevant to the needs of our customers today, and tomorrow. With PruVital Cover, we want to extend the gift of protection to people not eligible for insurance due to certain pre-existing conditions.

That said, protecting people in times of a health crisis is only one part of what we do. The other part is prevention and we do this through programmes such as myDNA4, to encourage our customers to maintain good dietary habits and a disciplined fitness regime so they live better and more healthily.”

Other Benefits of PruVital Cover

To make it easy for people to be protected under PruVital Cover, all a customer needs to do is to answer a short health questionnaire on his or her current medical condition to purchase the policy.

PruVital Cover also offers customers the flexibility of adding on a critical illness option for blindness, heart attack, stroke, cancer and kidney failure. These five critical illnesses were chosen as individuals afflicted with type 2 diabetes and the three “health highs” tend to face a greater likelihood of developing these conditions over time. Designed to provide well-rounded coverage, PruVital Cover also features a total permanent disability5 option for customers who want to have enhanced protection.
