Singapore, 1 April, 2013 – Prudential Assurance Company Singapore (Pte) Limited (“Prudential Singapore”), one of Singapore’s leading life insurers is the title sponsor for adventurer Khoo Swee Chiow’s upcoming expedition to the peaks of Mount Everest and Mount Kanchenjunga, named the Prudential Singapore Everest Expedition 2013. If all goes according to plan, the expedition, which starts on 11 April 2013, will be the first time that both the highest and the third-highest peaks in the world are successively climbed.
Mount Everest stands at 8,848 metres high, while Kanchenjunga at 8,586 metres is also the second highest peak in the Himalayas. To date, around 3700 people have reached the peak of Mount Everest while 283 climbers have reached the summit of Mount Kanchenjunga. This year is also significant as it marks the 60th anniversary of the first ascent up Mount Everest.
On top of the sponsorship, Prudential Singapore is also organising a fund-raising activity to benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation Singapore. Staff and members of the company’s agency force can pledge $10 for every 3000 metres covered in Khoo’s ascent up Mount Everest. If all goes as planned and Khoo reaches the summit, each staff/agency force member who pledges to donate will make a total contribution of $30 each. The company will then match the total amount raised and the total proceeds will go to Make-A-Wish Foundation Singapore.
“Prudential Singapore is supportive of individuals who aspire to great goals and who are willing to take on new and exciting challenges. Khoo Swee Chiow is an inspiration to us all with his strength of character, positive attitude and will to succeed. We applaud him for embarking on this new adventure. Not only does he have the mental and physical abilities to be successful in such a gruelling challenge, he also embodies the passion and spirit that will take him all the way. This is something that we truly value at Prudential Singapore.” said Tomas Urbanec, Chief Executive Officer of Prudential Singapore.
“We are also pleased that we can support Make-A-Wish Foundation Singapore with this. Prudential Singapore always endeavours to give back to society where possible and this activity offers an opportunity to do so. The fund-raising activities around this expedition will enable us to help the Foundation fulfil the dreams of children who have debilitating medical conditions,” added Mr Urbanec.
Khoo Swee Chiow first made a name for himself as a member of Singapore’s first-ever Mount Everest expedition in 1998. Since then he has reached the summit of the highest peak twice more and accomplished a long host of other challenging feats such as being the leader of Singapore’s first Antarctica expedition. He was also the first South East Asian and the fourth person in the world to complete"The Adventure Grand Slam," that is, the South Pole, the North Pole and the Seven Summits.
“Having succeeded in reaching the world’s two highest peaks, naturally, Kanchenjunga, the third highest, is my next goal. To combine it with Everest back-to-back is like a dream project. It will require a lot of planning, endurance, patience and luck for me to succeed safely. I am very excited to have another opportunity to test my limit especially on Himalaya’s two highest peaks. I want to thank Prudential and other sponsors for their support in making this a reality,” says Mr Khoo.
Mr Khoo is expected to return from his expedition in June. Throughout his journey, he will be sending regular updates to his website:
