Basics of Shariah investing

It is important to make an informed decision on your wealth plans to ensure that you are on track to achieve your financial goals. Here is an overview of what Shariah philosophy1 entails to aid your understanding prior to investing:

Eliminates companies whose business and financial operations are impermissible in nature

Prohibits interest (‘Riba), gambling (‘Maisir’), uncertainty, and risk (‘Gharar’).

Ethical investments that enhance the society

Prohibits businesses related to alcohol, pornography, gambling, and pork-based products.

Risk and profit sharing

Both businesses and investors must share the associated risks and profits.

Asset-backing

Each financial transaction must be tied to a tangible, identifiable underlying asset.

Is Shariah investing only for Muslims?

Shariah investing can benefit any investor irrespective of their religious faith, as long as you trust that the investment strategy and the portfolio are beneficial for you to grow your own wealth portfolio.

Though it is governed by more stringent requirements, its performance in the long term is comparable to a conventional investment2:
