Find Peace in Nature with Andrew Chuah

We are all responsible for our own healthy ageing, as we prepare to live a longer and happier life. Do you find it challenging to be healthy for 100? It is easier than you think. We round up the health champs in Prudential to share simple health tips. In this edition, we have our financial consultant, Andrew Chuah, who finds calm amidst the wild adventure sports that he participates in.

Tell us what excites you most about adventure sports?

I enjoy scuba diving as it has a calming effect. You will feel as light as a feather floating in the sea. All you can hear is your own breathing and the sound of the water bubbles around you. My ideal travel destination is a seaside resort. I have always loved the sea as it is soothing to listen to the waves.

I travel frequently and take up different sports with a group of friends I made during my scuba diving. My most memorable trip was 12 days in Sabah, Malaysia, where we spent 5 days scuba diving at Sipadan before ascending Mount Kinabalu. At the summit, I proposed to my wife, which made this trip unforgettable.

These adventure sports keep me fit. Before each hiking trip, I spend many weekends training at Bukit Timah Hill and climbing small mountains in Johor Bahru. Exercising also helps me to manage stress in a fast-paced work environment. I take a break from work when I work out. Whenever I need inspiration, I will go for early morning or night runs as these quiet moments allow my creativity to flow.

Any tips on balancing work and life with travel plans put on hold amid COVID-19?

Before COVID-19, I was attending High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) classes 3 to 4 times a week. I turned to online videos and classes when the gyms were closed during COVID-19. Now, I exercise every day, alternating between HIIT, stretching exercises, core training and running. This gives my muscles time to rest and recover.

I also watch my diet carefully and try to eat healthily. When dining out was not possible before Phase 2 of the reopening, I prepared my meals at home and experimented with making cereal and smoothie bowls. I also reduced my carbohydrate intake. As a result, I lost 5kg.
